NSW Scientific Program

Every two months the NSW Jurisdictional Committee host a Scientific Meeting with a special guest presenter. Since 2021, the presentations have been recorded and available for all RACMA Members, for educational purposes.

NSW Scientific Meeting – 5 December 2024

Topic: “Partnerships between Universities and Health Services”

Overview

To explore and understand the various types of partnerships with universities in urban, regional, and rural settings and what can we do as medical administrators to strengthen and harness the maximum potentials of these partnerships in creating and supporting the medical workforce of Australia. The members of the panel will share their experiences and perspectives in this area and facilitate a discussion with the participating members. We look forward to an active participation from RACMA Fellows, Associate Fellows and candidates.

Prof Mark Arnold is the Chief Medical Officer for WNSWLHD, Rheumatologist and Bioethicist, and the past Head of the University of Sydney’s Rural Clinical School (Dubbo/Orange). He has held executive positions with the NSW Branch and National Board of the Australian Rheumatology Association, headed University Human Research Ethics Committees and been a member of RACP and NHMRC Ethics Committees. He has had extensive experience in professional regulation most recently as a member of the NSW Medical Council and as a PSR reviewer. He is a Current National Examiner and a member of the RACP Adult Medicine Divisional Clinical Examination Committee.

Prof Steevie Chan is a medical practitioner and educator with more than 30 years’ experience in health care and tertiary education, spanning public and private sectors. He is currently the District Director of Medical Services at the Central Coast Local Health District and was previously Dean and Professor of the School of Medicine (Sydney) at the University of Notre Dame Australia. He has a deep commitment to health care quality and patient safety and contributes to health outcomes research and education. Steevie has held senior roles in major teaching hospitals and the NSW Health Department, including as the Senior Policy Adviser for the Minister for Health; and Clinical Senior Lecturer (Population Medicine) at the University of Sydney. He has postgraduate and specialist qualifications in health administration and public health, and was formerly Chair, Board of Studies, Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (NSW).

Prof Michael Brydon is a 35 year, experienced paediatrician and senior health manager with significant Board and networking experience. He has been on the AHHA board for 6 years and in 2019, he joined University of Notre Dame as the A/Dean of its Rural Clinical School. Prior to that he had been the CE of The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (2016/2019), having been in that organisation since 1983 in a range of roles. Prof Brydon has completed the Company Directors course and has undertaken leadership training internationally. Prof Brydon was awarded an OAM for services to children and social justice issues. Prof Brydon is known for his advocacy for children, the social determinants of health and the importance of investing in early childhood.
