About the Role

The Medical Co-Director works in partnership with the Co-Director (Nursing) of Division of Women, Children and Youth across Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals and is accountable for the safety and quality, financial and operational management of the Division. The Co-Directors, through strategic leadership and their membership of the RDPH Executive Team, drive divisional performance, achieve organisational targets and implement the highest standards of clinical and corporate governance within the NT Health Values. The Medical Co-Director will contribute to the overall leadership and management of RDPH, and the achievement of the RDPH Strategic Priorities.

The Medical Co-Director in partnership with the Co-Director (Nursing) of the Division of Women, Children and Youth across Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital is accountable for the safety and quality, participation in planning, policy and strategy development, financial and operational management of the Division. The position reports operationally to the Executive Director Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals and professionally to the Director of Medical Services, Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospital.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  1. Lead the development, reform, coordination and delivery of cost-effective and integrated health services and delivery models across acute and primary care sectors in collaboration with other sector leaders.
  2. Ensure a culture of high performing teams, professional excellence and accountability within the NT Health Values Framework, across all streams and Divisions to improve patient care and outcomes.
  3. Drive an environment of quality improvement and clinical outcome measurement through clinical audit and review to promote continuous quality improvement across the Division.
  4. Lead patient flow, demand management and other operational strategies across the Division to achieve organisational targets and objectives.
  5. Ensure human resource responsibilities across the Division, including the direct supervision of medical staff, allocation of duties, establishment of rosters, performance management of staff and monitoring staffing levels, workloads and hours worked.
  6. Be accountable for divisional financial management, and efficiencies and allocation of resources.
  7. Ensure the coordination of research, teaching and training programmes, and contribute to NT Health and national clinical leadership in the relevant specialty areas.
  8. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  9. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

About You

Essential:

  1. Eligible for specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia with Fellowship of a relevant Medical College.
  2. Demonstrated extensive relevant professional experience at a senior level in an acute tertiary setting.
  3. Demonstrated high level ability to provide strategic leadership, deliver business and clinical service plans and outcomes in a complex hospital environment, with the demonstrated high level ability to lead, negotiate, implement and drive organisational change in support of the achievement of strategic and operational goals.
  4. Demonstrated high level knowledge and experience of continuous quality improvement principles and their application.
  5. Demonstrated high level ability to operate effectively in an environment of ongoing change and uncertainty and to create a flexible environment that enables others to meet changing demands in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment.
  6. Demonstrated high-level ability to contribute effectively as a member of the RDPH executive team, with use of advanced communication, interpersonal, conflict management and negotiation skills to maximise productive working relationships with the executive management and the multidisciplinary teams.
  7. Demonstrated high level ability to engage with and develop relationships with key stakeholders within and outside of the organisation including an ability to interact effectively with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  8. Demonstrated ability to manage human and financial resources in an environment of competing demands.
  9. Demonstrated ability to manage conflict to promote cooperation, teamwork and understanding in undertaking challenging, demanding and complex work.

Desirable:

  1. Completion of qualification in Health Management and/ or Leadership.
