About the Role

The Director of Medical Services, Liverpool Hospital is responsible for the provision of high level strategic and operational medical leadership and advice to ensure high quality health care service provision at Liverpool Hospital.

  1. The Director Medical Services works with the General Manager and Executive Leadership team to implement integrated clinical services, ensuring resources are used efficiently and effectively. Provide high quality medical administration services, within the clinical privileges granted by the Chief Executive, on the advice of the SWSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.
  2. Provide leadership and guidance to medical staff across Liverpool Hospital by promoting teamwork, collaboration and by facilitating clinician involvement in the management of clinical services.
  3. Recruitment, management, and workforce planning for both Senior and Junior Medical Staff, to ensure the provision of effective clinical service; ensuring the appointment, development, and supervision of suitably credentialed medical staff at Liverpool Hospital is consistent with State, District, and Health Service. Participating as a member of the Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC)
  4. Lead the planning and delivery of the medical services and other departments within the portfolio, ensuring efficient allocation and utilisation of appropriately skilled, registered, qualified staff across the services within Liverpool Hospital.
  5. Support operational hospital management, including patient flow and resource demand as required.
  6. Facilitate and assist medical staff with quality assurance, patient safety, patient flow management and financial management and assist in the implementation of recommendations for improvement of medical services resulting from adverse event investigations and hospital-wide clinical quality reviews.
  7. Provision of advice on the management of medico-legal issues, hospital complaints, Health Care Complaints Commission investigations and Ministerial requests. Finance and resource management, to achieve performance targets; this includes management of agreed FTE, efficient and effective medical workforce rostering and overtime management, TESL and leave management.
  8. Assistance with compliance with ACHS standards for accreditation and other accreditation standards relating to medical services. (Colleges, HETI)
  9. Development and implementation of strategies to improve recruitment and retention of junior medical staff. Ensure wellbeing and safety is maintained at the highest standard; working closely with other health leaders to attract, develop, retain, and support staff.
  10. Participate in activities such as the on-call roster, disaster management and committees as required, such as patient safety, medication, redevelopment, and other hospital/district committee meetings.
  11. Involvement in Local Health District-wide projects and issues as requested by the General Manager or Local Health District Executive, and relieving the General Manager as required. The Director of Medical Services is responsible for acting as Hospital Medical Controller in the Hospital’s disaster plan.

About You

Essential Skills & Attributes:

  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered, or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (FRACMA) or other specialist recognition provided by the Staff Specialist (State) Award.
  • Tertiary management qualification at a master’s level (MHA and/or MBA or equivalent) or relevant experience in a senior medical management role, including in a tertiary hospital.
  • Comprehensive understanding of contemporary clinical care and various clinical models of care and associated clinical information systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, including a demonstrated ability to identify, analyse, develop, and mobilise strategies relating to clinical care processes and systems and their economic and quality performance.
  • Knowledge and experience in management of clinical quality assurance, patient safety programs and medicolegal issues for hospital medical services.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in managing current issues in medical workforce, medical staff training and industrial requirements for medical officers.
  • Ability to both lead within and work as part of the executive team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to accountability and proven financial management skills within a health environment.
