With over 500 overnight beds the San cares for more than 60,000 inpatients and 118,000 outpatients each year with around 20,000 patients presenting  to our emergency department. Our on-campus Radiology service delivers over 90,000 medical imaging investigations annually and we value the  strategic partnership we have with ANU for medical education and research.

The hospital has embarked on a strong strategy refresh to ensure that we are ‘Future Ready’ and well placed to ensure financial success and this executive role will play a critical role in helping to achieve this.

About the Role

The Chief Medical Officer is the executive who provides comprehensive specialist medical administrative leadership including the resolution of complex clinical, medico legal and operational challenges to ensure that the medical services provided by AHCL are delivered to the highest professional and ethical standards.

Reporting to the CEO, this role provides leadership for a medical services team incorporating Medical Workforce, Clinical Governance, Accreditation and Clinical Directorships.

The role is responsible for aligning medical strategies with overall business objectives, while maximising clinical effectiveness and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient centred care and medical workforce wellbeing.  It  is keenly  focused on building a strong collegial community of Accredited Medical Officers (AMOs) while fostering a positive culture of AMO clinical and financial accountability. It ensures that strong governance frameworks are in place to support patient safety, and effective risk management and represents the organisation in industry forums and conferences.

About You

  • You will be registered as a specialist medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia. Preference will be given to a FRACMA, although consideration will be given to applicants with the AFRACMA or holders of other appropriate College Fellowships who bring the required leadership qualities and administrative experience.
  • You’ll bring direct experience working in a similar Medical Services leadership role within a large acute teaching or private hospital.
  • You’ll be a strong people leader and communicator who can galvanise teams and build partnerships toward a shared vision and purpose.
  • You’ll have a positive track record for constructively engaging AMOs in reflection and practice improvement and for driving medical services transformation and innovation.
  • You’ll have strong financial, analytical, and business acumen and
  • Your personal outlook and approach to practice will be well aligned with the Mission and Values of our organisation.
