Private health insurance in Australia is facing a major challenge as the population has rapidly lost confidence in the products offered. A key driver has been the rising concern over out-of-pocket costs.
There are a range of current incentives that enable over 20 health insurers to operate in Australia. Some of these incentives will be explored.
The current reform agenda will be explored with an explanation of the implications for health insurers, hospitals and specialists. Options for the future, particularly in developing products across insurers, hospitals and specialists that restore the population confidence in the products and the sustainability of the industry.
A number of emerging industry trends will be highlighted.

David is a specialist medical practitioner with over 35 years senior leadership experience. He has held senior clinical roles in private health insurance, public teaching hospitals, large government departments, private hospitals and national injury insurance.
Guiding the implementation of large health sector projects has honed his skills in planning, practitioner engagement and designing appropriate monitoring and creating reporting frameworks.
Through focusing on data reporting and accountability he has been able to significantly enhance provider performance and improve the quality of health care available to people at both the local and national levels.
David is passionate about ensuring health resources are applied to achieve both an optimal patient experience and world best health outcomes at an affordable price
