If you’ve ever needed an excuse to wear odd or wacky socks then you have free reign this Friday, 7 June, to mark Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day.
The event is all about raising awareness of the mental health of all doctors and health practitioners around the world. Founder Dr Geoff Toogood, Peninsula Health Cardiologist and AFRACMA, created the Day in response to what he experienced at work when he wore odd coloured socks to work.
Dr Toogood has experienced depression and anxiety and the day he wore odd socks he found the talk behind his back was he was failing again. But in reality he was well and his socks, apart from the last two odd socks, had been eaten by his new puppy.
Rather than start a discussion about was he ok, Dr Toogood heard of behind the scenes whispering. He started the day as an attempt to address the stigma and to make it ok for a Doctor not to be ok. He wants to reduce Doctors suicide round the world.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved. All you have to do is wear bright, crazy or odd socks, take a photo of the socks or you in the socks and post the photo on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook – #crazysocks4docs or #socks4docs
