RACMA’s submission to the MBA on Revalidation in Australia E-mail

RACMA provided a submission to the paper by the Medical Board of Australia’s Expert Advisory Group (EAG) on Options for Revalidation in Australia.

The approach to revalidation in the EAG’s paper has two distinct components:
  1. Strengthening Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to drive practice improvement and better patient healthcare outcomes
  2. Proactively identifying doctors who are either performing poorly or at risk of performing poorly, assessing their performance, and if necessary, supporting their remediation.
RACMA's response has stated support for the approach, however, highlighted the following:
  • Specialist medical administrators are employed in diverse roles, and the scope of practice may differ across the specialty. Further, specialist medical administrators often work at a level where their work and decisions affect the broader system and hence a whole community rather than an individual patient. A CPD program needs to acknowledge and align to these characteristics of specialists working in the medical administration field
  • The MBA needs to be cognisant there are medical practitioners working within the scope of practice of medical administration, but who are not affiliated with the College, and this may present a potential issue to achieving the objectives of revalidation in Australia
  • It will be important to move towards a platform that provides employers access to a "single point of truth" for ensuring medical practitioners are fit to practise
  • There needs to be consideration given to the time to implement revalidation in Australia, including the development of tools and frameworks, time to test and pilot, and for broader communication. RACMA looks forward to working further with the Medical Board of Australia on this initiative.
