The Letter to the Editor of RACMA’s online journal The Quarterly is the communication of comments, arguments, new information or calls for action, to medical colleagues with an interest in health administration.


1. Task

Select any article published in The Quarterly during the past 24 months and write a Letter to the Editor in response to it. The Letter will reflect a Candidate's understanding of her/his role in relation to the competencies of medical expert, communicator, collaborator, health advocate, manager, professional and/or scholar.

The Letter should include:
  • Clear reference to the article’s title and author, and edition of The Quarterly
  • Whether the Candidate agrees or disagrees with the arguments of the article, stating why
  • If the Candidate feels that there is evidence that was not mentioned and what particular points should be added to the article
  • If the Candidate has had a similar experience in a different setting, specifying details
  • If the Candidate feels that more could be done about the issue, stating their reasons.

2. Specifications
  • The Letter will be 300-400 words (maximum) with the word count indicated on the submission FTP Assessment Task Cover Sheet.
  • For privacy and confidentiality purposes this work must be de-identified by Candidates prior to submission.

3. Submission
  • A Candidate's work previously submitted to The Quarterly will not be accepted for assessment unless it was first assessed by a College Censor.
  • Letters which are heavily biased, defamatory or discriminatory, will not be considered for assessment or publication.
  • Submit the Letter to Editor in a WORD document to RACMA via the eETP with the FTP Assessment Task Cover Sheet (available on the web). The Cover Sheet must be signed by your Preceptor otherwise your submission will not be assessed.
  • The Preceptor should acknowledge on the Cover Sheet that the work is ready for submission and assessment by markers.
  • Please refer to the Annual Training Calendar (available on the web) for timelines of submission.

4. Assessment

Feedback will be provided by senior RACMA Fellows as points out of 100, broken down as follows:
  • Relevance to readers of The Quarterly (10 points)
  • Analysis (20 points)
  • Logical sentence and paragraph structure, argument construction and turn of phrase (20 points)
  • Correct grammar, spelling and word limit adherence (20 points)
  • Appropriate and accurate referencing & Use of Harvard Referencing Method (10 points)
  • Clear relationship to RACMA competencies (20 points).
A recommendation for publication will be provided from four choices:
  1. 'Accept as is'
  2. 'Accept with minor revisions'
  3. 'Major revisions recommended'
  4. 'Reject as a submission for a Letter to Editor of The Quarterly'.
If (1) or (2) have been nominated, the Candidate will be invited to complete forms in relation to possible future publication in The Quarterly.

Note: While submission of this task is compulsory, subsequent publication in The Quarterly is a separate issue. If you do not want your letter published, please indicate so at the bottom of the assignment.

The Editor of The Quarterly has the discretion not to publish a letter. If your Letter is considered suitable for publication, it may be edited. If you don't want your work edited, you may ask that it be published in full at the time that you submit it for assessment. No letter will be considered for publication unless your name and contact details are also published.
