Candidates are required to complete an approved university Masters; program to meet the academic requirements of the Fellowship Training Program (FTP). This is to provide Candidates with the theoretical underpinning to their experiential training and medical management practice while undertaking training towards Fellowship.
It is not a requirement to have this Masters’ degree completed before commencing as a Candidate. The study may be undertaken and completed during candidacy prior to being eligible for election to Fellowship.
Candidates may seek credit if they have previously completed (within 10 years) comparable studies to the College academic requirements that can be recognised in full or in part by RACMA. Subject to the review of credit applications, exemption for the Masters’ units may mean that Candidates may still be required to enroll into and complete single units in specific university to meet the requirements of the College’s training program.

Master of Business Administration programs are increasingly offered by most Australian universities however without specific health services study units this program may not satisfy College requirements. It is essential to meet the College’s core subject requirements.
The College has reviewed the option of subjects required for the FTP and has reduced the number of University subjects from seven units to five core subjects, as per the following in the Candidate’s Masters study program in the Australian and/or New Zealand health care context:
- Health Law and Ethics
- Health Care Systems
- Financial Management in Health
- Leadership
- Epidemiology and Statistics OR Research Methodology OR Evidence-informed decision-making
The change will be implemented from 2019 – however those Candidates who have not yet enrolled in the full Masters’ program or have yet to enrol in all the required subjects to meet the RACMA academic requirements may contact the College for advice on possible exemption(s).
Graduate Diploma courses do not satisfy the College requirements for Fellowship. In some instances universities may give credit for subjects completed at Graduate Diploma level towards a Masters’ degree. Any Candidate who has completed a Graduate Diploma would need to discuss this matter with the relevant university and confirm the suitability of their planned study program with the College.
Candidates are required to make their own arrangements to enroll in an approved course of study in a university of their selection and provide evidence of enrolment for the required core subjects to the College for a record purposes.
Candidates are encouraged to discuss their selection of Masters’ subjects with the College. it is also important to discuss any changes in the Masters’ program with the College first to ensure that additional courses to address identified training or knowledge gaps are not required to complete Fellowship training successfully.
RACMA offers commencing Candidates an opportunity to select their Masters degree from one of the universities below. As courses are continually evolving, it is important to check with the university in the first instance and then to confer with the College to ensure that the Masters program you choose meets the RACMA Curriculum requirements.
