Where you’ll be working

Alice Springs Hospital is a 183 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. It is the only major hospital covering over a million square km with a strong focus on Indigenous and remote health as a result of such a dispersed population. Over two thirds of acute admissions are Aboriginal people both from town and remote communities. Consequently, cultural, language and communication skills are an important component of our service delivery.

About the Role

To provide high quality clinical services, under the guidance and supervision of specialist staff, through the relevant Department to Alice Springs Hospital, Alice Springs and Barkly region/fringe areas of Western Australia and South Australia.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  1. Provide high quality day-to-day care for inpatient and outpatient clinical services in the department.
  2. Supervise the day-to-day activities of interns and residents and ensure the overall quality of clinical care and the medical record.
  3. Participate in the on-call roster as required to ensure the proper functioning of the hospital.
  4. Initiate and partake in quality management, peer review and ongoing personal medical education programs.
  5. Participate in teaching for junior staff and education programs for medical students
  6. Undertake research as appropriate.
  7. Participate in other duties as delegated by the Head of Department or Executive Director of Medical Services.
  8. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
  9. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour

About You

Essential:

  1. Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  2. A minimum of 3 years relevant postgraduate experience.
  3. Ability to work as part of a team.
  4. Interest in Indigenous health.
  5. Good verbal skills and good written skills.
  6. Able to directly manage and supervise junior staff

 

Desirable:

  1. Working towards a recognised specialist qualification.
  2. Possession of AMC certificate where relevant.
  3. Demonstrated ability to assume administrative and supervisory responsibilities.
  4. Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  5. Flexibility to operate in a changing environment

The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position. This role carries specific immunisation requirements. To be eligible for appointment you will be required to meet the immunisation requirements associated with Category A (direct contact with blood or body substances.
