It provides a range of services with specialty areas in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, O&G, Paediatrics, and General Surgery. The Region

The outback meets the tropics in Katherine, a big country town three hours’ drive south of Darwin on the Katherine River.

  • Katherine is the fourth largest town in the NT with an urban population of approximately 6,300.
  • The region is full of gorges and misty waterfalls, thermal springs and ancient cultures and extends from the Gulf of Carpentaria near the Queensland border towards the Kimberley Western Australia.
  • The central business district is set 350 metres from the banks of the Katherine River. The township services the regional centres of Pine Creek, Mataranka, Borroloola, Daly River and Timber Creek.
  • Traditional lands of the area include the Wardaman, Jawoyn and Dagoman aboriginal land trusts. The township itself is a convergence zone of these traditional lands.
  • Natural highlights of the area include the mighty Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, the Jatbura Trail, Elsey National Park, Cutta Cutta Caves and Katherine Hot Springs.
