Where you’ll be working

The Royal Darwin Hospital is co-located in the northern suburbs of Darwin with the 100 bed Darwin Private Hospital. It is a University teaching hospital affiliated with Flinders University (NT medical program), the Menzies School of Health Research and the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre. With 367 beds it provides a broad range of services in specialty areas to the Darwin urban population as well as serving as a referral centre to the whole Top End of the Northern Territory, a population of around 200,000, including rural and very remote Aboriginal communities. There is a strong clinical focus on Indigenous health and chronic diseases. Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) is the only tertiary level hospital, which supports other smaller hospitals including Palmerston Regional Hospital, Katherine Hospital and Gove District Hospital as major referral centre. RDH has almost all major medical and surgical specialities (except cardiac surgery) and level 3 ICU and Emergency departments.

Palmerston Hospital with 116 beds is a subacute service and opened in August 2018 as an extension of Royal Darwin Hospital, including an Emergency Department, Day and low acuity Surgery, Rehabilitation, a Medical ward, a GEM ward and Ambulatory care services.

About the Role

We are seeking a senior leader who is energized by high quality service improvement in a challenging environment. This is an opportunity to lead the design, delivery of ongoing reform focusing on patient flow, highest standards of safety and quality and financial accountability.  The Executive Director leads the Royal Darwin and Palmerston Regional Hospital Senior Leadership Team to deliver on the Service Plan and key performance indicators with contemporary services reflecting consumer needs.

In this role, you will achieve financial targets that systematically embed accountabilities with a focus on empowering clinical staff in fiscal and clinical outcomes. The Executive Director is a member of the Top End Executive Leadership Team and reports to the Regional Executive Director.

Primary objective:

The Executive Director – Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals, provides the leadership and management of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) and Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH) and, as a member of the Top End (TE) Region Executive Leadership Team, contributes to the delivery of the requirements outlined in the Service Plan with the Department of Health.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and management of RDPH, in collaboration with the relevant clinical and non-clinical leaders and managers in
  2. Proactively review management systems, processes and standards for RDPHs and implement changes to consistently improve the service to the community.
  3. Partner with key stakeholders to implement effectively deliver on strategic, business and clinical service plans, financial management, people management, risk management, quality and safety, and clinical service delivery.
  4. Contribute to the leadership and delivery of the Service Plan for TE, which may include sponsorship of major projects and change initiatives.
  5. Provide leadership and direction in workforce planning activities particularly in relation to the appropriate development and management of the RDPH workforce.
  6. Represent the Regional Executive Director in relation to committees, meetings, forums, and working parties.
  7. Follow defined service quality standards, workplace health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe, services and workplaces.
  8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role-modelling behaviour.

About You


    1. General and/or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
    2. Must have completed not less than the equivalent of six years of full time experience in medical practice as a Staff Specialist.
    3. Extensive experience and success in managing hospitals and health services in a comparable context, with a history of delivering on performance-based
    4. Extensive experience and demonstrated ability as a senior/executive leader in health, with an ability to demonstrate strategic and/or operational outcomes delivered.
    5. Demonstrated ability and experience in the fiscal management and oversight of budgets and resources amongst competing priorities and without compromising patient care.
    6. Demonstrated commitment to quality and safety improvement, research, education and innovation to achieve organisational goals with proven ability to implement strategic change to facilitate workforce effectiveness.
    7. Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary health issues across the health continuum, with a proven ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with diverse groups within the health sector and wider community.
    8. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, negotiation and conflict resolution skills and track record in achieving a high level of patient and client centred focus.
    9. An ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures, with experience and/or interest in Indigenous health.
