The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital has provided specialist clinical care in Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat across Victoria for over 150 years. The Eye & Ear has over 50 different outpatient clinics for the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of vision and hearing loss and provides a 24 hour emergency eye and ear, nose, and throat service. The Eye & Ear provides care annually for around 220,000 patients, with over 170,000 outpatients, nearly 40,000 emergency patients and over 16,000 inpatients.

About the Role

This key appointment is accountable to the Chief Executive Officer and provides an exciting opportunity to lead and contribute as an integral member of the executive leadership team.  The role has responsibility for professional oversight of the medical workforce, driving a strong clinical governance culture and partnering with staff and key stakeholders to deliver world leading care and research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Executive Director Medical Services (EDMS) is responsible for the development of strategic policies and practice as well as oversight of professional issues and legislative requirements for medical services across the Eye & Ear.
  • The incumbent will assume the role of Chief Medical Officer and have a key leadership responsibility within the Clinical Governance framework, and oversee the management of medico legal issues. As a member of the Executive team, the EDMS will contribute to the wider organizational agenda in the strategic and operational management of the Eye & Ear. Other responsibilities include the leadership of the quality and improvement initiatives undertaken in the organization, and innovation in clinical models of care.
  • The EDMS will be responsible for leading and coordinating an effective change program, with particular emphasis on fostering clinician engagement and leadership.

About You


  • Qualified medical practitioner with relevant postgraduate qualifications in health or management and/or recognized Specialist Fellowship.



  • Experience as a clinical practitioner in a health setting



  • Demonstrated comparable experience in management at a senior level
  • Senior health sector management experience, with proven ability to develop and meet strategic, operational and budgetary objectives
  • Demonstrated experience in business and performance planning, implementation and monitoring in a clinical environment
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture that encourages sound patient care, financial responsibility, innovation and productivity improvements
  • A strong record of motivating and developing employees through effective leadership
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgement in ethical, clinical and management issues competencies
  • Strong relationship skills in influencing, consultation and conflict resolution
  • A focus on strategic and clinical leadership, experience in change management and excellent interpersonal and influencing skills
