Where you’ll be working

Gladstone Hospital is at present a regional hospital with a total capacity of 79-beds with the ability to increase to over 100 beds and treatment spaces (with a new emergency department opening a total 36 treatment spaces). Gladstone Hospital is the hub for Gladstone and Banana regions. The Hospital offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including Emergency, General Medicine and Surgery, basic Orthopaedic, Clinical Investigation, Obstetrics, Maternity, Gynaecology, High-Dependency and Coronary Care, Palliative Care, Medical Imaging, Pathology and Paediatrics.
Additional services include Mental Health, Alcohol and other Drugs Service, Oral Health, Physiotherapy, Dietetics, Speech Pathology and Outreach/community-based facilities, as well as a Primary Health Care Centre located at Boyne Valley.

Gladstone Hospital is growing and has at present approximately 498-full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute, community and primary care. Approximately 600-babies are born at the Gladstone Hospital each year and approximately 3165-surgical cases are performed in the two operating theatres. Around 1100-endoscopies are performed yearly in the procedure room. At present there is a 31-bed mixed General Surgical and Medical Ward and a four bed High Dependency Unit, where patients may be held pending retrieval, or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatric patients. The hospital has a busy elective surgical environment and Surgical Outpatient Clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.

Gladstone Hospital is preparing for “Destination 2030” and has already reorganised the Acute Supportive Services and Anaesthetic Department accordingly.
The Clinical Directors are responsible for the supervision and co-ordination of duties of the various Visiting and Staff Specialists, Senior Medical Officers, Registrars, Resident Medical Officers and Medical Students on placement with the respective departments.

The Staff Specialist positions at the Gladstone Hospital are supported by a team of Senior and Junior Medical Officers. These positions support the Emergency Department and inpatient units providing anaesthetic and obstetric services as well as general inpatient services. Gladstone Hospital also has full time specialists in Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medicine, Surgery, Anaesthesia and Paediatrics.

About the Role

The Director of Medical Services (DMS) is a member of the Gladstone and Banana (Business Unit) and carries the following main responsibilities:

  • Operationally manage effective, efficient, and safe medical services across the Gladstone and Banana Business Unit, ensuring medical staffing models and skill mix are contemporary and in line with facility role delineation and function.
  •  Actively promote and participate in clinical service developments including contemporary models of care, taking leadership for the peak clinical governance and quality activities within the Gladstone and Banana Business Unit in collaboration with the Directors of Nursing.
  • Provide medical professional advice and oversight to the Banana Shire facilities – working specifically and in close collaboration with the Director Medical Services Biloela – facilitating contemporary and appropriate medical models to support safe and effective service delivery at those sites.
  • Provide advice to the Executive Director through the Gladstone & Banana Senior Leadership Team by providing timely professional and clinical advice which enables the Business Unit and the HHS to manage strategic and tactical imperatives across the range of health services provided.

About You

Mandatory qualification/s: MBBS or equivalent eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

  • Specialist registration with Medical Board of Australia.

Possession or progression towards either a FRACMA or FACHSM.

  • The appointee will be required to undergo a credentialing process and will be granted appropriate scope of clinical practice. There is a system of review and renewal of credentials and Scope of Clinical Practice for Specialists and Non-specialist Senior Medical Officers on staff. This is reviewed on a five-yearly basis. Your qualifications and certifiable skills and competencies determine the scope of clinical practice you will be granted and subsequently your salary status. Qualifications will determine appointment levels.
  • Proof of identity documents: Candidates must provide certified copies of requested proof of identity documents for the purposes of General Criminal History and National Police Certificate checks.
  • Shift work: Appointees will be required to work all shifts in accordance with the unit roster.
  • Licence to operate vehicle: This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate licence endorsement to operate this vehicle is required. Proof of this endorsement must be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • Travel: Travel throughout the health service may be required as part of this position.
  • Vaccine Preventable Diseases: It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases during their employment.
