Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong’s CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

About the Role

The Director Medical Services (DMS) position is a senior medical leadership role at Barwon Health and encompasses broader support from a strategic, clinical governance and workforce perspective to other health services in the Barwon South West region. Specifically;

  • Colac Area Health, 2 days a week
  • Hesse Rural Health, 1 day a month
  • Health Service Partnership initiatives and support to region

This role provides the successful applicant an opportunity to manage key business functions / units and take on a senior role in regional clinical services and workforce planning. The role reports directly and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Barwon Health. The CMO is accountable for the following functions / units:

  • Medical Workforce, medical education and training
  • Clinical governance, Safety, Quality and Improvement (including Medico-Legal)
  • Research governance
  • Public Health and Primary Care
  • Credentialing of medical staff, New Technology / Clinical Practice, Sabbatical Leave
  • Pharmacy Services
  • Strategic leadership across Barwon South West and support towards Health Service Partnership

The role also reports directly to CEO of health services where the DMS provides direct medical administration services to. The DMS role is physically based primarily at Barwon Health with some travelling components to the region. Management of specific functions and units under the auspices of the CMO will be negotiated with the successful applicant, based on experience and interests.
