Where you’ll be working

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is a major metropolitan teaching hospital. Patients can access a range of services including coronary care, intensive care, orthopaedics, general medicine, surgical, obstetric, respiratory, rehabilitation, paediatric, maternity and emergency care. The hospital also provides a wide range of outpatient services including allied health, dental and podiatry clinics, child, adolescent and family health, drug and alcohol, health promotion and rehabilitation and aged care. An acute mental health service is co-located at Hornsby Hospital. The hospital underwent a $265 million redevelopment, which was completed in 2021. The redevelopment includes a refurbished and expanded emergency department and a new clinical services building.

About the Role

The Director of Medical Services is responsible for providing expert professional and clinical leadership in the strategic and operational management of Medical Services and the Medical Workforce unit.

The Director Medical Services is responsible to the GeneraI Manager, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital

The DMS is a senior member of the Health Service Executive, and as such participates in all decisions and accountabilities regarding the management of the Health Service.

The DMS has primary responsibility for:

  • The coordination of the effectiveness, quality and safety of clinical operations,
  • The effective and efficient deployment of the medical workforce and professional leadership of medical services,
  • Providing leadership in service planning,
  • Directing supporting and overseeing the clinical governance systems within the Health Service, Providing leadership in planning and responding to disaster management through the organisation As a member of the executive team, the Director Medical Services (DMS) achieves these goals in an analytical, collaborative and inclusive manner.

A remuneration package can be negotiated depending on seniority, experience and the nature of engagement chosen (Staff Specialist or Visiting Medical Officer) calculated with 5 weeks recreational leave.

About You

Selection Criteria

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (FRACMA).
  2. Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
  3. Tertiary management qualification at a masters level (MHA and/or MBA or equivalent), and/or relevant experience in a medical management role.
  4. Comprehensive understanding of clinical care and various clinical models of care and associated clinical information systems
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of and experience in managing current issues in medical workforce, medical staff training and industrial requirements for medical officers
  6. Significant experience and effective performance in a senior medical leadership role in a complex health organization
  7. Demonstrated commitment to accountability and proven financial management skills within a health environment
  8. A comprehensive knowledge of and demonstrated experience in the ability to lead clinical governance, quality / patient safety improvement strategies, clinical risk management and performance management
