Where you’ll be working

The Far West Local Health District is one of 15 LHDs under NSW Health, providing high quality public health services to the communities in far west NSW. FWLHD has a mandate to provide the highest quality care and services to its communities using the latest clinical evidence and technological enablers. Our vision is to create excellence in rural and remote healthcare. In the Far West LHD, we are working together to make a real difference to the health outcomes for our communities.

Key to our success of course, is our people. Our workforce is inclusive and diverse. We employ well over 800 clinicians and support staff across our 9 health facilities in Broken Hill, Balranald, Dareton, Ivanhoe, Menindee, Tibooburra, Wentworth, White Cliffs and Wilcannia. This is a district position and will be based in Broken Hill Hospital but will work across all district sites.

The Broken Hill Hospital is the main referral hospital for the district and has 100 beds that services a wide area with a population of 25,000 people.  It is a rural teaching hospital, providing acute, non-acute and outpatient services, including dialysis and chemotherapy.  It has an emergency department, general medical, surgical, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric, mental health and sub-acute beds.  Work is underway to enhance the level of ICU and CCU. Support services include Pathology, Medical Imaging (CT scan), as well as a wide range of Allied and Primary Health services.

About the Role

As Director of Medical Services, you will develop and sustain effective liaison and consultation with medical providers across the Far West LHD as well as for the provision of strategic planning, leadership and direction for specialty services on a District basis.

  • Provide the Chief Executive with expert advice on medical workforce matters, medico-legal issues and the relevant clinical policy, award and statutory requirements.
  • Provide significant input into the development and oversight of strategic and business plans, policy development, business and medical service strategies and relationship management.
  • Provide clinical leadership to the functioning of the District and lead a culture of excellence in a diverse, rural community while contributing to the FWLHD’s vision of excellence in rural and remote health.

About You

  1. Current registration as a medical doctor with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (APRHA).
  2. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators or FRACMA trainee or equivalent.
  3. Evidence of a Class C Drivers Licence and the ability and willingness to travel for work purposes. This may involve travelling long distances
