Who we are

Located 50 minutes’ drive from the CBD of Sydney, the 850+ bed Liverpool Hospital is the major health service for the rapidly growing region of south-western Sydney. As the quaternary referral hospital for the South Western Sydney Local Health District and the principal teaching Hospital of both the University of NSW and the University of Western Sydney, Liverpool Hospital has the state’s busiest Emergency Departments with annual census of 95000 presentations as well as a state-wide trauma service.

The service profile also includes 23 operating theatres, diagnostic and imaging services, maternity, paediatric, cancer care, mental health, ambulatory care, allied health and medical and surgical services from birth to aged care. Quaternary referral services include interventional neuro-radiology, hybrid trauma theatre, ECMO, and a 24 hr cardiac interventional unit. The patient demographic for SWSLHD and Liverpool Hospital is ethnically diverse as reflects the South West Sydney population, with many patients from CALD and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

About the role

Reporting to the General Manager and a key member of the executive team, the Director Medical Services is at the forefront of medical and surgical leadership at Liverpool Hospital and will be expected to assist in the development and implement strategies to ensure safe and high quality health care across all medical departments in the Quaternary Hospital. The appointed candidate will provide support to the Hospital Executive on Hospital committees and on policy development and implementation in relation to medical services. This includes the provision of advice on the management of patient safety, patient liaison and complaints, review of adverse events, and medico-legal issues. The Director Medical Services also actively promotes education, training and research across Liverpool Hospital.

Selection criteria

  • Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellow of the RACMA and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  • Senior management experience in a major health care institution, preferably a teaching facility.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of systems and issues included in management of hospital medical services, staff specialists, VMOs, clinical academics and junior medical staff.
  • Strong financial management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in management of clinical quality assurance, patient safety programs and medicolegal issues for hospital medical services.

  • WHS Responsibilities: As a leader you are expected to support the organisation achieve the aims of the safety management system, to establish and maintain a positive health and safety culture in the workplace and to consult with workers and others when making decisions that may impact upon the health, safety and welfare of those in the workplace.
  • WWCC: Current Working with Children Check Clearance (where applicable).
  • NPC: National Police Check (This check will be conducted by the Health Service for Recommended Candidates only).
  • Staff Health: Compliance with the SWSLHD and NSW Health, Staff Immunisation Policy (Only for Category A Positions).
