About the Role

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) reports to the Chief Medical Officer and will contribute to the strategic goals of the branch, through leadership, knowledge and innovation. The role will have broad responsibilities across the Department and the ABF, and deputies as Chief Medical Officer when required. The two roles will work together closely, and ensure the Department and ABF have broad clinical representation, both internally and across the various external forums.

The position will be based in Canberra, and will assist with oversight of the medical officers and registered nurses of the CAT in Sydney and Canberra. The responsibilities of the Chief Medical Officer Branch are broad and complex, with staff often required to work under pressure and to manage urgent, high priority tasks. Relevant areas include:

  • Policy, Program & Service Development and Management
  • Detention Health
  • Migration and Refugee Health
  • Complex Case Management
  • Staff Health and Wellbeing
  • Clinical governance, assurance, safety and quality activities
  • Data Analysis and Reporting
  • Liaison with other agencies, and advisors
  • Departmental engagement activities.

 

These services must be provided:

  • In accordance with APS values and the Code of Conduct
  • In alignment with the Department’s health governance and assurance frameworks, policies and procedures, in accordance with relevant standards
  • Where appropriate, with engagement and in collaboration with local or international health authorities and other Departmental personnel in policy, program and operational areas, and;
  • Such that they are based on best available evidence and current medical practice.

 

The DCMO will support, provide advice or guidance and be available to represent the Clinical Advisory Team at key governance committees including the Health Advisory Group Meeting and the Detention Health Assurance Meeting and provide advice to senior executive, as required.

About You

Essential:

  • Broad-based, clinical skills and experience
  • Hold a Fellowship with one or more of the Medical Colleges in Australia.
  • Full & unconditional registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Demonstrated senior leadership experience within organisations managing health services in the public service or corporate sectors
  • Ability to obtain and maintain at minimum a Baseline security clearance

  • A broad awareness of global public health issues affecting Australia
  • Interest, training and experience in a relevant non-clinical domain, i.e. business, economics, law, administration, public policy etc.
  • Interest in governance, assurance and quality management
  • Interest in development & administration of public health policy
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Highly developed skills working in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Comfortable working in a complex, fast-paced and dynamic organisation
  • Knowledge of and expert use of MS Office software programs.
