Job Description
At Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) we provide a range of public health services to the Riverina and Murray regions of New South Wales; across a geographic area of approximately 125,631 square kilometres. With around 241,000 residents living within our District, we employ approximately 4,000 staff who work within our 31 hospitals and community facilities.

Western Sector - Griffith Base Hospital

Griffith Base Hospital (GBH) is a 117 bed C1 peer grouped hospital providing a range of acute specialist services (both resident & visiting) including emergency medicine, general medicine, surgery, paediatric medicine, oncology, obstetrics, intensive care, respiratory medicine, renal dialysis and rheumatology. Each year there are approximately 19,500 emergency presentations, 2,500 operations and 540 births.

Additional services at GBH include physiotherapy, dietetics, pharmacy, occupational therapy and Aboriginal health. There are also a range of diagnostic services including Pathology, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, General X-Ray and Mammography.

The western sector includes several smaller hospitals that refer to Griffith for complicated cases such as Hillston, Lake Cargelligo and Hay.

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Director Medical Services (DMS) to lead a committed team of medical officers providing a broad range of clinical services. As part of the Executive Team and working closely with the General Manager, the DMS provides leadership management and strategic direction to improve the quality of health care.

The role requires a collaborative approach to lead all aspects of medical service delivery, day to day operational management, and clinical governance including improvement initiatives within the service.

A key aspect of the role is to provide a high level of medical administration advice to the executive of GBH and designated facilities and to provide overall management and support of VMOs, Staff Specialists and JMOs.

Selection Criteria
To be considered for this role you can demonstrate the following:

  • Unconditional general and/or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (FRACMA) or Candidate progressing towards Fellowship of RACMA or Associate Fellowship of RACMA

  • Demonstrated ability in developing, implementing and evaluating systems and processes to improve patient safety and ensure quality of care.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary clinical governance systems and processes associated with the provision of health care services.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate, consult and negotiate effectively with the community, senior health professionals, management and staff, health interest group representatives and senior executives of government agencies.

  • Demonstrated high level of skill in the analysis of complex medical policy and planning issues, formulating new approaches and developing comprehensive implementation and improvement strategies

  • Demonstrated successful experience in both the development and implementation of initiatives to improve the delivery of medical services.

  • Demonstrated track record operating at an Executive level within a health service, and critical decision-making skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD Values, goals and strategies.


Employment is offered in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
A flexible remuneration package will be negotiated with successful candidate.
