RACMA’s submission to the Medical Council of New Zealand on Strengthening Recertification for Vocationally Registered Doctors

RACMA has made a submission to the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) in response to their consultation on Strengthening Recertification for Vocationally Registered Doctors.

The MCNZ is reviewing the current recertification requirements for vocationally registered doctors and proposing new requirements and standards for medical college accreditation.  The proposed changes are consistent with the MCNZ’s vision and principles of recertification, where recertification activities should reflect each doctor’s individual learning needs and support continual improvement in performance.  Central to this is an individualised Professional Development Plan (PDP) that is targeted to a doctor’s identified development needs.

RACMA is supportive of an approach that both strengthens and individualises recertification so it is relevant to an individual doctor’s practice.  RACMA’s continuing education program incorporates many of the features in the proposal, and the College is happy to work with the Medical Council of New Zealand in the implementation of these requirements.

RACMA has highlighted to the MCNZ considerations in the implementation of the proposed requirements set out in the consultation paper, including consideration of the diverse roles and work setting of RACMA’s vocationally registered medical administrators, and consideration for requirements for medical practitioners who are not affiliated with the College, but who are working within the scope of medical administration.
